Place Value War

Place Value War! (2,3, or 4 Digit Edition)

Target Grade: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Grade

Objective: Students will compare two 2-digit, 3-digit or 4-digit numbers using >,<, and = symbols based on the value of the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones digits.

[Teacher Prep]

  • Materials Needed: * One deck of standard playing cards per pair (Remove all 10s and Face Cards. Aces = 1).

    • "Place Value War" Recording Sheet.

  • Lesson Alignment: Reveal Math Unit 2, Lesson 2-5.

  • Group Size: Pairs (Player 1 and Player 2).

[Student Instructions]

1. Deal and Draw

Shuffle the deck and place it face down between you and your partner. Each player draws  two, three, or four cards from the top of the pile and lays them face up on the table.

2. Build Your Best Number

Look at your cards. Arrange them in any order to create the largest 2, 3, or 4-digit number possible.

Strategy Tip: Think about which digit should go in the Thousands, Hundreds, or Tens place to make your number the biggest!

3. The Reveal

On the count of three, both players say their number aloud.

  • Example: "I have 852!"

  • Partner: "I have 741!"

4. Record and Compare

Write both numbers on your recording sheet. Compare the numbers by looking at the Hundreds place first. If the Hundreds are the same, look at the Tens!

Draw the correct "Gator Mouth" (>,<, or =) to show who won the round. The player with the larger number wins the cards from that round.

5. Play Again!

The player with the most cards at the end of the deck (or the most "wins" on the recording sheet) is the Place Value Champion!

[Differentiation Tips]

  • Support: Provide a "Place Value House" mat where students can physically move the cards into labeled Hundreds, Tens, and Ones columns.

  • Challenge: Play "Smallest Number War." Students must arrange their three cards to create the lowest possible value.

  • Extension: Have students write their number in Expanded Form (200+40+5) on the back of their recording sheet before the next round begins.
